What a beautiful post!

Comforting to mothers everywhere, I'd bet!

my god this is powerful! your love and desire to understand and forgive your mother leaps from the computer screen. your conclusion that she did the best she could is exactly right. we never know how much our parents did the best they could until we have children and can only do the best we can.

more...its so good to come along on your memories...

Jesus, where are the kleenex?? That was one of the most honest and heartfelt writings I have ever read. This post took me through a lot of emotions. Also makes you look at your own relationship with your mother. I feel I may have complained and bitched a little more than my own mother deserved when I was a child (looking back, I was truly a damn brat at times - my mama outta woop my tail right now just on GP). You have clearly overcome some of the things that may have confused you about your mother and the way she was at times and you've obviously matured to a point where you can still love, respect and appreciate your mother in light of some of her shortcomings. Afterall, we all have them. Thanks you sharing your memories.

It's amazing what you remember when you start to write it down. Like you said your mother did the best she could. In my 20s I was certainly hard on my own mother for all the things that I thought she had done wrong. Now in my 30s I realize that she did the best she could. I harbor no resentment. Life is too short for that because resentment keeps you living in the past and it prevents you from living in the present.
